Overview
The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) in Northern Ireland is administered by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE), not local councils. The maximum grant is £35,000. It helps people with disabilities make changes to their home so they can live more independently.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant or someone living with them must be disabled
- The property must be the main residence
- Works must be necessary and appropriate for the disabled person's needs
- Works must be reasonable and practicable
- Owner-occupiers, private tenants, and housing association tenants can apply
- Means testing applies based on income and savings
- No means test for children or young people under 19
Key Information
If you or someone in your household has a disability, you may be eligible for help to adapt your home. Common adaptations include stairlifts, level access showers, ramps, door widening, and bathroom modifications.
The first step is to speak with your GP who can refer you to an Occupational Therapist. The OT will visit your home to understand your needs and recommend suitable adaptations.
You don't need to wait until things become difficult - it's better to plan ahead for adaptations you may need. The process can take several months, so apply early.
If approved, the grant covers the full cost of works up to £35,000. The means test may require some contribution based on your financial circumstances.
